Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli ground forces have crossed Lebanon’s Litani River. This movement comes as military officials from Israel and Lebanon are scheduled to meet for U.S.-brokered discussions. The ongoing conflict has continued despite a monthlong cease-fire that hasn’t curbed the fighting.
Netanyahu spoke near the Lebanese border while visiting troops, asserting that Israeli forces had advanced beyond a significant demarcation line in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, evacuation warnings have been issued to towns and villages in the region, as airstrikes have intensified. The Lebanese health ministry reports over 3,300 fatalities since the renewed conflict with Hezbollah started in early March.
The military offensive coincides with anticipated meetings at the Pentagon, aimed at stabilizing the border. Political discussions are planned for the following week. The crossing of the Litani symbolizes a significant military step, indicating operations beyond Israel’s “forward defense line,” several miles into Lebanon, where clashes have occurred recently.
Netanyahu has faced pressure from Israeli hard-liners, leading to increased military actions against Hezbollah, including a recent strike near Beirut. Hezbollah’s drone activities in southern Lebanon remain a concern for Israeli forces. The Israeli government is under scrutiny to ensure the safety of its northern communities subjected to rocket attacks by the Iran-supported militant group.
The Pentagon talks are expected to focus on Hezbollah’s disarmament, a major Israeli negotiation demand. Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun, in a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, emphasized that achieving a cease-fire is essential for further progress.
Amid these developments, discussions between Washington and Tehran to conclude the broader war persist, with Iran insisting that any agreement must halt Israeli strikes on Hezbollah. This requirement places Lebanon at the center of efforts to finalize a deal.
Israel’s military leader, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, reinforced Netanyahu’s position, stating that Israeli forces are advancing into new areas and will continue targeting Hezbollah “wherever we can.”
