Journey is currently on their Final Frontier Tour, which is set to extend until November. Keyboardist Jonathan Cain has opened up about the band’s decision to retire. In an interview with the Rock & Roll High School podcast, Cain attributed his long career to the unwavering support from fans.
“I think the only reason I’m still out here is the fans,” Cain explained. “It’s time for me to close the chapter. It’s a beautiful time to say goodbye, for me.”
Cain reflected on Journey’s 2017 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. During the ceremony, former lead singer Steve Perry accepted the award with the band but chose not to perform. Cain expressed his surprise at Perry’s decision not to sing with them. He was convinced that Perry would join them on stage for a song.
“I was certain — I would have bet money he would’ve changed his mind and come and sang ‘Lights’ with us or something, but he didn’t, which was weird,” Cain shared during the podcast. “I kept looking in the wings and he never came.”
The possibility of Perry reuniting with Journey appears slim. Although Perry had dismissed rumors of joining the band for their farewell tour, Cain remains hopeful. Perry has always been welcome to perform with them, according to Cain.
Cain mentioned starting a rumor a while back that Perry might join them on tour, illustrating his wish for a reunion. However, fans should be prepared for any outcome.
Journey holds a legendary status in rock music, and their retirement marks the end of an era. Despite unresolved tensions with Perry, the band deserves recognition for decades of memorable performances as they prepare to move on to new endeavors.
