The Justice Department is examining different aspects of the lawsuits brought by E. Jean Carroll against Donald J. Trump. Carroll, an 82-year-old former magazine writer, accused Trump of sexual assault. Donations by a nonprofit founded by Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn’s co-founder and a critic of Trump, to fund Carroll’s legal fees are under scrutiny. The nature of potential charges remains uncertain.
Andrew S. Boutros, the U.S. attorney in Chicago, clarified that his office has not opened any criminal investigation against Carroll. He made no mention of Hoffman. Hoffman, reacting on social media, stated, “Trump was found liable for sexually assaulting E Jean Carroll, defaming her, and now he’s going after her again,” addressing the situation.
Carroll, through a representative, has chosen not to comment. Examining the hurdles for prosecutors reveals substantial challenges they might face if planning to secure convictions against Carroll or associates due to the financial support provided during her legal battles.
In April 2023, Trump’s legal team accused Carroll of hiding the financial aid from Hoffman before proceeding with the trials related to her civil lawsuits. This accusation was brought to the judge’s attention before the commencement of those trials.
