Pope Leo XIV’s Encyclical on AI: A Call for Human-Centric Technology

Pope Leo XIV presented his first Encyclical Letter “Magnifica Humanitas” at the Vatican on May 25, 2026. This letter focuses on the rapid ascent of artificial intelligence in today’s world. The Pope compares this technological advance to the biblical Tower of Babel story, where human pride led to divine punishment.

While recognizing the potential benefits of AI in fields like medicine, research, and education, Pope Leo issued a stark message. He stated, “Artificial intelligence needs to be disarmed.” This strong choice of words aims to capture attention, provoke thought, and suggest a way forward for humanity.

The encyclical is extensive, offering numerous insights. Pope Leo expressed concerns regarding job displacement by AI. He underscored that employment provides people with a sense of purpose, stating, “Work is not simply an instrument. The pursuit of greater profits cannot justify choices that systematically sacrifice jobs. The economic order must remain subordinate to human dignity and the common good.”

Additionally, Pope Leo pointed out that despite AI’s ability to collect vast amounts of data, it cannot substitute for the understanding gained from human experiences like joy, loss, and connection. AI may mimic language and behavior or simulate empathy but lacks the deeper wisdom that humans acquire through life experiences.

Pope Leo further warned of the potential for AI to create misleading interactions. Chat bots may replicate expressions of empathy or friendship, which can be engaging but also deceptive, especially for those feeling lonely or anxious. The illusion of a relationship poses risks of exploitation.
