Exhibition Celebrates Marilyn Monroe’s Legacy

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles has opened a new exhibition titled Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon, showcasing the life and career of Marilyn Monroe. Despite her discomfort in front of the camera, Monroe remains one of the most photographed women of the 20th century, and her influence continues to resonate.

Curator Sofia Serrano and museum director Amy Homma have assembled a comprehensive collection of Monroe’s work, including film costumes and memorabilia. Homma notes the enduring public fascination with Monroe, stating, “The fire has not extinguished. People still want to connect with Marilyn.”

One of the exhibition’s highlights is Monroe’s iconic pink dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Initially designed to be more revealing, the dress became a last-minute replacement to tone down Monroe’s image after nude photos of her surfaced. Serrano reflects on Monroe’s resilience, which continues to inspire people facing their own challenges.

Monroe’s journey began as Norma Jeane, a child of divorce who lived in foster homes before marrying at 16. She later married Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, with Miller writing The Misfits for her. Although Monroe starred in 29 films, she was known for her intense preparation and moody demeanor during productions.

Despite never winning an Oscar, Monroe’s image is highly valuable. Authentic Brands Group manages her estate, licensing her likeness globally. Dana Carpenter, from Authentic Brands, says younger audiences are drawn to Monroe’s self-starter story.

Monroe, a top box office draw, surprisingly did not amass wealth. Collector Scott Fortner, who owns extensive Monroe memorabilia, has clarified rumors about her finances, showing she independently purchased her Brentwood home.

Monroe expressed that becoming a millionaire was never her ambition. Her last interview, captured by Allan Grant for Life magazine, is featured in the book Marilyn: The Lost Photographs, The Last Interview, published shortly before her death from an apparent drug overdose.

Monroe’s death adds to her mystique, yet her life continues to inspire millions. Fortner compares Monroe’s impact to Cleopatra, believing people will discuss her legacy for centuries.

Monroe created a character that captivated the world, and she remains a beloved figure due to her complex persona and achievements.
