Uzbekistan is attracting attention from young travelers drawn by its beauty, authenticity, and affordability. Was this Central Asian destination worth the 12-hour flight?

Gabe Castro-Root embarked on a nine-day journey across Uzbekistan.
The ancient city of Khiva, located in the dusty western region of Uzbekistan, is rich with wonders. Sunlight dances on the intricate blue, green, and orange mosaics. The crumbling fortress from the 12th century is adorned with vibrant racks of fabrics. Bakers pull aromatic samsas, filled with meat and pumpkin, from traditional tandoor ovens.
In an unexpected twist, I ended up in a stranger’s living room, watching Russian TV. While exploring the narrow lanes of Khiva’s historical core, I noticed a soaring minaret beyond the city’s mud-brick walls. It seemed ideal for a bird’s-eye view. Despite seeking an entrance, I found only a locked door.
In English, I inquired a nearby gardener about an alternative entrance. Responding in Russian, a language I do not speak, he gestured for me to follow him. Rather than leading me to an entrance, he invited me into his home across the street. He seated me in the living room, offered me bread coated in yogurt, and switched on the TV. For the next 20 minutes, we watched a comedy and communicated through hand gestures. Later, he escorted me to the door, handed me two dates wrapped in a paper towel, and sent me on my way. Unfortunately, I never learned his name.
The Itchan Kala, the walled inner fortress in Khiva, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Throughout my February journey in Uzbekistan, I witnessed numerous acts of unexpected hospitality. Like many young travelers, I selected Uzbekistan as it promised fewer crowds and tourist traps, alongside opportunities for spontaneity and adventure.
