Tech Leaders Raise Concerns about AI Risks
In September 2023, prominent tech figures like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman met with U.S. senators to discuss the potential hazards posed by artificial intelligence. Musk highlighted AI’s risks to civilization. Years have passed without any meaningful legislation to regulate this rapidly advancing technology. Despite numerous committee hearings and the formation of advisory groups, no consensus exists in Congress on addressing AI.
Recently, three AI researchers left their positions due to fears that AI could become uncontrollable. Jacob Coxon, a former employee at Anthropic, voiced on social media that AI’s creators sincerely worry about its potential to endanger humanity by the decade’s end.
Sen. Schumer Demands Action on AI
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for a Senate session with high-ranking officials to discuss the risks of unchecked AI development. Schumer criticized the lack of initiative under the Trump administration and urged Congress to act if the administration fails to do so.
Schumer wants to address testing for advanced AI systems, control technology exports to China, and protect against AI-related cyber threats. Concerns about AI have intensified as experts warn about its imminent threats.
Calls for AI Regulation Continue
Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon suggested allowing leading AI labs to self-regulate temporarily, as Congress works on a long-term plan to slow AI development. Coxon stated that current proposals, including an AI “kill switch,” may soon become outdated.
Current legislation could be overtaken by fast technological advances, making self-regulation a temporary solution for AI labs.
AI Policy Needs Political Focus
Former President Barack Obama stressed the importance of having a clear plan for AI policy. He encouraged Democrats to work on strategies for managing AI if he were in a presidential position for the 2028 elections. Democrats were advised to prioritize this issue given AI’s irreversible progress.
