Aiden Brunner’s Breakthrough Leads to Stunning Jacobs Victory

Junior running back Aiden Brunner awaited his opportunity at Jacobs High, aware of the challenging path to break into the starting lineup under coach Brian Zimmerman. Known for an emphasis on running the ball, getting a lead role was no small feat.

I knew coming in I wasn’t going to play right away. Brunner explained. I knew I had to wait and develop. I talked with ‘Zim’ about it. Now, it’s my chance.

In a remarkable comeback, Brunner capitalized on his chance during Friday night’s game. He scored two pivotal second-half touchdowns, including the game-winner with 1.8 seconds left, leading Jacobs to a 31-27 victory over Burlington Central in the Fox Valley Conference. This comeback erased a 17-point deficit.

Brunner completed the game with 38 yards on 11 carries, including crucial touchdowns from 1 and 8 yards. His performance was complemented by Austin Stennett, who completed 19 of 31 passes, gaining 263 yards and connecting with Owen Crouch for a 74-yard touchdown. Crouch totaled five catches for 111 yards, Chris Williams added seven catches for 59 yards and an 8-yard touchdown on a reverse, while Jordan Hudson had five catches for 75 yards.

For Burlington Central, Reece Beemer completed 14 of 30 passes for 112 yards, including a touchdown pass. His 10-yard touchdown run briefly put Burlington Central ahead 27-24 with 1:06 remaining. Parker Auxier was also a standout, rushing for 126 yards with two touchdowns on 24 carries.

Jacobs has relied on Stennett’s development at quarterback this season, yet Zimmerman was pleased to witness Brunner’s pivotal second-half moments.

He’s been waiting for his moment, Zimmerman commented. We told him it was his time. We cherish our running tradition. Even though we’ve faced challenges, Austin’s made some impactful plays.

Burlington Central edged out front with a 13-play, 68-yard drive, but Jacobs pushed back. Stennett led the charge, culminating in Brunner’s decisive touchdown.

That play call, Brunner elaborated, we knew our strength was overpowering them. The line cleared the way, and I saw the gap. It felt great. My development has paid off when I could finally show my progress.

The Rockets initially led 20-3 after Beemer’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Chace Chesney. However, Stennett’s 74-yard pass to Crouch three plays later ignited the comeback. Following vital defensive stops, Jacobs advanced 71 yards capped by Brunner’s 8-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 20-17.

Williams delivered an 8-yard touchdown, shifting the lead to 24-20 with just over five minutes left. Despite the Rockets regaining the lead, Burlington Central coach Brian Iossi expressed regret over missed red zone opportunities.

Honestly, we lost in the second quarter when we couldn’t score in the red zone, Iossi admitted. Finishing those plays was crucial, though I’m proud of our effort. It ranks among the year’s top games.
