An air traffic controller in Phoenix, Arizona, prevented a potential aviation mishap Thursday night involving two American Airlines jets. The incident involved one aircraft landing while another was taking off, both using the same flight number and radio frequency.
The experienced air traffic controller recognized that American Airlines Flight 2482, inbound from Chicago to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, shared a call sign with a departing flight also bound for Chicago. This created a critical situation as the flights converged.
By quickly adapting to the situation, the controller issued specific instructions to the pilots. The distinction was made by referring to the flights as “American 2842 departing” and “American 2482 arriving,” thereby ensuring both aircraft maintained a safe separation.
“I’ve been working in air traffic for 25 years,” the controller remarked to the pilots, as recorded on ATC.com. “I’ve never seen two aircraft pretty much merge with the same call sign. That’s pretty incredible.” He emphasized the gravity of the situation by adding, “It could have been disastrous, but I’m glad it all worked out.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the planes kept the necessary distance apart at all times and is now investigating the incident. The problem arose because the flight from Chicago O’Hare International Airport was delayed, causing scheduling complications. A substitute aircraft was used to allow Phoenix passengers to depart without further delay.
American Airlines acknowledged the situation, stating that they are reviewing the details of the flights sharing the same call sign. They praised both the air traffic controllers and pilots for maintaining the required safety separation and successfully addressing the issue.
The incident concluded without any incidents, highlighting the vital role of air traffic control in air safety.
