Albert Pujols Eyeing MLB Management Role with New York Mets

Retired baseball legend Albert Pujols continues to pursue a managerial position in Major League Baseball. He has held discussions with the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres but has found opportunities elsewhere. Pujols managed the Dominican Republic entry in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, where his team competed against the United States, the tournament’s runner-up.

Pujols also serves as the president of baseball operations for Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League. In 2025, he led Leones del Escogido to a league championship in his debut season as a professional manager.

The New York Mets recently removed Carlos Mendoza from his managerial role after a disappointing season. John Harper of the New York Daily News reported Pujols has shown interest in this vacancy and shares a strong connection with Mets star Juan Soto.

The Mets have appointed Andy Green as their interim manager, providing David Stearns, president of baseball operations, ample time to choose a permanent replacement. Pujols, at 46, merits consideration for the position.

In New York, Pujols’ profile may align better than in Anaheim or San Diego. Former outfielder Mike Cameron felt Pujols might distract the Padres, who required a low-profile manager. The Padres faced an uncertain ownership situation, with the team’s major share changing hands in May.

These factors are absent in New York. Owner Steve Cohen supports the team with MLB’s largest payroll. Soto’s $765 million contract highlights the burdens Pujols can comprehend.

Eric Chavez, a former coach, emphasized the need for a strong persona in managing the team. “For players like Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor, you need a leader who commands respect,” he said.

Pujols was among the candidates for the Angels’ position, but negotiations struggled over contract terms. Kurt Suzuki accepted the Angels’ offer, which only included a one-year deal.

The Mets, despite their struggles, have the means and talent to rebound, courtesy of Cohen’s financial resources. Chavez expressed surprise that Carlos Beltran was not considered for the interim role. Beltran, a special assistant to Stearns, was previously the Mets’ manager before the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

Pujols’ extensive managing experience, especially in the Dominican Republic, provides him with the credentials the Mets might be seeking. With the team looking to improve, Pujols could be the catalyst needed for success.
