At a young age, Alyson Cahill became a familiar presence in Mother McAuley’s gym. Her mother, Erica, coached the junior varsity team for the Mighty Macs, and Alyson, along with her sister Grace, spent considerable time in the gym. Alyson recalls the early attraction to the sport, expressing her desire to play one day, inspired by the packed stands and enthusiastic fan section. As a junior and middle hitter, she is now an integral part of the team.
Mighty Macs Triumph at ASICS Challenge
Alyson Cahill played a crucial role in Mother McAuley’s championship victory at the ASICS Challenge in Chicago. She delivered five kills and five blocks as the Mighty Macs defeated Assumption of Kentucky 25-23, 25-17 in the final. Troy recruit Cahill’s performance was complemented by UConn recruit Keira McQuillan, who added 10 kills and earned all-tournament team honors. The Mighty Macs secured the title for the seventh time in history, marking their first win since 2023.
Other significant contributors included Coastal Carolina commit Peyton Heatherly with 22 assists and Youngstown State-bound Ava Calle, who managed 15 digs. In addition to their tournament win, the Mighty Macs defeated Assumption in a nonconference match, illustrating their improvement. The prior encounter between the two teams on September 12 in Kentucky had Assumption winning 26-24, 25-20.
Recognition and Hard Work
Keira McQuillan remarked on the team’s progress, noting the significance of defeating a highly ranked opponent twice in three days. Assumption entered the tournament ranked third nationally by the American Volleyball Coaches Association/USA Today, while McAuley was ranked 15th. Alyson Cahill’s development in the middle position has been a focus, with both teammates and coaches recognizing her growing influence on the court.
Mother McAuley coach Jen DeJarld sees potential in Cahill, emphasizing the importance of becoming a higher-level blocker and scorer. The coach praised Cahill’s capabilities and the trust the setters place in their middles.
Thrilling Semifinal Victory
In the semifinals, Mother McAuley triumphed over rival Marist 25-20, 23-25, 25-23 in a match full of anticipation for Southland girls volleyball fans. Alyson Cahill contributed with six blocks, making pivotal plays alongside McQuillan. The rivalry holds a special excitement, and Cahill noted the enjoyment of competing against known adversaries.
Alyson and Grace, who were teammates last season, continue to pursue volleyball beyond high school. With Grace playing as a freshman setter at NCAA Division II Spring Hill and Alyson committed to Troy, the Cahill sisters are advancing their athletic careers.
Reflecting on her choice, Alyson expressed satisfaction with Troy. She appreciated the coaches and the positive environment during her visit, aligning well with her aspirations.
