An armed individual was taken into custody on Monday after arriving at a security barrier near the U.S. Capitol. This incident led to a police probe investigating the reasons behind his visit to the well-secured area and resulted in a temporary shutdown of a section of the Capitol grounds.
The U.S. Capitol Police reported that officers apprehended the suspect at the North Barricade, where he was found in possession of a firearm. Since weapons are forbidden on Capitol Grounds, officials quickly closed the area for investigatory purposes.
“Our investigators are working to learn more about the suspect and why he drove to the U.S. Capitol,” stated the Capitol Police.
As of now, the suspect’s identity and any potential charges remain undisclosed.
The event unfolded with police on hand into the afternoon, engaging in activities like removing items from a Ford Bronco positioned at an angle at the barricade. Observers noted that items seemed to consist of water bottles among other personal belongings.
A dog found inside the vehicle was extracted without any harm and transported by an SPCA vehicle.
The North Barricade continued to stay closed as the investigation proceeded.
