Leah’s struggle with sleep has been a significant part of her recovery. Her brother wrote, “Since the incident, Leah has had difficulty sleeping, and on those nights, she’s been reading back through your messages. These come from her family and community in Australia, her whānau in New Zealand, and individuals worldwide.” The Maori term “whānau” underscores the family connection, offering Leah genuine comfort and strength.

On June 13, Leah, mother to a 1-year-old and devoted teacher, was attacked close to shore while swimming. The incident resulted in life-threatening injuries including multiple bites, fractures, and severe blood loss. Initial medical responses involved life support, a medically induced coma, and several surgeries, including the amputation of her arm. More surgeries are expected to stabilize her condition.

Following a 10-day coma, Leah regained consciousness and expressed her love to her family. Her immediate concern was for her young daughter, August. Her brother Joshua found this a hopeful first step, acknowledging the long recovery Leah faces.
