Author William P. Young’s latest book, Return to the Shack, explores the power of forgiveness. The novel is a sequel to his previous work, The Shack, which narrates a father’s journey of healing after the tragic loss of his daughter during a camping trip. In The Shack, Mack, the main character, receives a mysterious letter from God, inviting him to a shack where he encounters a unique interpretation of the Holy Trinity. Despite some religious controversy, the story found resonance with many readers and was adapted into a film in 2017. Young’s new book focuses more on forgiveness, as Mack encounters his daughter’s killer, who is given a more humanized storyline.
Young shared insights on forgiveness and reconciliation, emphasizing their differences. He stated, “Forgiveness is for the sake of the one who’s been harmed, so you can live your life free from the weight of past hurts. Trust can remain absent even after forgiveness. Reconciliation is a challenging process of rebuilding trust, serving the perpetrator more than forgiveness does.”
Young praised Erika Kirk as a symbol of forgiveness. Last year, Kirk surprised many by forgiving the man accused of killing her husband, Charlie Kirk, during a public event in Utah. At her husband’s memorial service, Erika expressed forgiveness rooted in her Christian faith, showing the message Young strives to convey.
Young elaborated on forgiveness, saying, “It’s crucial to release the grip on past grievances, moving forward from their influence. Otherwise, it affects all relationships around us.” Erika’s act of forgiveness, as Young interprets, is a refusal to let past actions imprison her.
Young reflected on the universal need for kindness and honesty, questioning why these qualities should be absent in human character. He believes love surpasses violence, and is fundamental for positive change.
Young also shared his personal journey to forgive his father, stating, “Violence solves nothing; it increases existing conflict. As a child, experiencing my father’s abuse taught me that retaliation through violence would have been misguided.” He views love as transformative, enabling reconciliation and personal growth.
