Belgium Appeals FIFA’s Suspension Lift on Balogun’s Red Card

The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) is seeking to challenge FIFA’s decision to lift the red card ban on USA World Cup star Folarin Balogun. FIFA imposed the suspension after Balogun was red-carded against Bosnia and Herzegovina, stepping on defender Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle, resulting in a historic decision by FIFA to suspend the red card penalty.

The RBFA requested a complete explanation from FIFA, and a report from FIFA’s officiating body, expressing surprise over the decision. Belgium’s coach Rudi Garcia expressed disbelief, mentioning the decision as unprecedented in World Cup history. He said, “The Belgian federation defends football, its integrity, and ethics. It’s surprising.”

The USA faced Belgium in the Round of 16, following FIFA’s decision on Balogun. This marks the first instance since 1962 that a World Cup red card has not led to an immediate suspension. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino praised FIFA’s decision, emphasizing the unfair nature of playing with 10 men for 30 minutes of the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The RBFA is exploring options, emphasizing the protection of fundamental tournament principles and fair play. The potential for appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport remains unclear. Garcia refrained from commenting on whether former President Donald Trump’s intervention influenced FIFA’s decision.

Reportedly, Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the red card. FIFA announced a probationary period of one year on the match suspension. If Balogun repeats a similar offense, the suspension will be reactivated without affecting any additional penalties.

Balogun, supported by his teammates and team officials, now remains cautious. The potential consequences are clear, fostering fair play and adherence to FIFA’s regulations.
