Box Office Milestones: Spider-Man and Nolan’s Odyssey Dominate

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has continued to impress in theaters, gathering $144.5 million domestically during its second weekend. Current estimates indicate the Sony-Marvel film has reached $1.67 billion worldwide in just ten days. It stands to become one of cinema’s biggest blockbusters. In the United States and Canada, the film has earned $655.1 million, a record-breaking pace, while surpassing $1 billion internationally.

In a mere seven days, “Brand New Day” became the highest-grossing movie of the year, overtaking “Toy Story 5,” which achieved $1.07 billion globally. No previous Sony film has garnered over $100 million during its second weekend. It narrowly missed the record for the best sophomore weekend, a title held by “The Force Awakens” with $149.2 million in 2015.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” also achieved a significant milestone, crossing the $1 billion mark. In its fourth weekend, the Universal Pictures film added $31.5 million domestically, reaching a global total of $1.1 billion. This marks Nolan’s greatest box office performance, surpassing both “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08 billion) and “The Dark Knight” ($1 billion). “Oppenheimer” fell short with $975 million.

IMAX played a crucial role in this success. “The Odyssey” has now earned $147.3 million on IMAX screens in the U.S., becoming the highest-grossing domestic release on those large-format screens.

The film is yet to open in China, a significant market where it is set to debut on Friday. These achievements have contributed to Hollywood experiencing its best box-office year since the pandemic, with ticket sales 18.5% higher than last year, according to Rentrak.

This year has already seen five $1 billion films, the most since 2019. Apart from “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” the films “Michael” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” also crossed this mark. Summer revenue is expected to hit $4 billion soon, a key indicator of industry health.

Efforts to counter the blockbusters included two comedies that had limited impact. “One Night Only” earned $5.7 million, while “Super Troopers 3” debuted with $4 million. Both faced challenges despite audience interest.

Strong performances were noted in new limited releases. A24’s “Tony,” featuring Dominic Sessa as Anthony Bourdain, earned $348,955, averaging $58,159 per theater. Mubi’s film, “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” averaged $50,300 per location across five screens.
