Jalen Brunson played a crucial role in leading the Knicks to a championship title last June, despite struggling with a troubling wrist injury. Although fans didn’t realize the full extent of his injury until the season ended, it was serious enough to require surgery.
Brunson underwent wrist surgery on July 7 to correct a tendon issue causing it to snap over the bone each time he shot. This surgery was necessary for his recovery. He was given a clean bill of health in late September, just in time for the start of training camp.
As the Knicks began their title defense, Brunson’s shooting seemed impacted. Observant fans have noticed. A clip shared by SNY Knicks featured Brunson addressing media inquiries. When asked whether his limited practice due to surgery was affecting his performance, he responded, “Not at all.”
He hasn’t used his injury as an excuse. During the title run, he managed the injury without complaints. Despite his assurances, his shooting stats have dipped. In six games, he recorded career lows of 39.5 percent from the field and 32.5 percent from the three-point range.
However, he rediscovered his form during an Oct. 28 game in Chicago. Scoring a season-high 38 points against the Bulls, he shot 52 percent from the field and 60 percent from beyond the arc. This performance seemed to boost his confidence, as he acknowledged that the slump had been affecting him mentally, and success on the court helped dispel his doubts.
Despite the success in Chicago, challenges remain. The Knicks hold a 3-4 record and rank 22nd in offensive performance. Brunson’s shooting remains inconsistent, especially in high-pressure moments where he has made only 5 of 13 shots.
Brunson could blame the wrist surgery for his struggles, but he doesn’t. His determination is apparent, and if his performance against the Bulls signals a turnaround, fans will continue to support him.
