Lily Tang Williams, a businesswoman, secured victory in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District primary, defeating three other Republican candidates. Four GOP contenders aimed to turn the district, which encompasses the western part of the state, from blue to red. Tang Williams, the 2024 nominee for the seat, triumphed over her competitors.
An entrepreneur from Weare, Tang Williams co-chairs the New Hampshire Asian American Coalition. She led the race in terms of fundraising, accumulating nearly $1.2 million, whereas her closest competitor, Victor Orlando, gathered $175,000.
Tang Williams immigrated from China and identifies as a survivor of communism. She described herself as “open-minded” and “independent” during an interview with WMUR in April. Tang Williams expressed her readiness to challenge President Donald Trump when necessary for the benefit of her constituents.
“I oppose oppressive regimes and seek a plan from Trump to end the war in Iran and secure peace,” stated Tang Williams when questioned about international conflicts.
Tang Williams criticized officeholders who she accused of self-enrichment. She previously led the state’s Libertarian Party.
Two other contenders, Dan Nicholson and Michael Anthony Callis, garnered only minimal voter support. The district currently has Democratic representation with Rep. Maggie Goodlander (D-N.H.).
Both Tang Williams and Orlando projected a center-right image in a predominantly Democratic-controlled state. Despite New Hampshire being a reliable blue state, Tang Williams secured 47% of the vote in her 2024 campaign.
