Caretakers Support Rejected Elephant Calf at National Zoo

Robbie Clark, head elephant caretaker at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, faced a pivotal moment when an Asian elephant calf named Linh Mai was born in February. The newborn weighed in at 308 pounds, but her entrance into the world was met with rejection. Both her mother and grandmother exhibited aggressive behavior towards the calf.

This challenging situation required full attention, leading Clark to remain at the zoo for 29 consecutive days. The urgency to provide care amplified as Linh Mai, with her distinctive fuzzy hair, struggled without maternal support.

The dedicated caretakers, including Clark and fellow keeper Jason Gue, took on the responsibility of nurturing Linh Mai. They swam alongside her to foster a sense of security and familial bond critical for her survival and adaptation.
