CBS News Faces Criticism over Report on Abdul El-Sayed’s Past Comments

CBS News experienced pushback from some far-left critics regarding a report about Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. The report, published as the nation approaches the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, highlighted past remarks made by El-Sayed concerning the tragic event.

The CBS News article noted that El-Sayed’s comments, which were later deleted, are facing renewed scrutiny. These posts included comparisons between the nearly 3,000 Americans who died on 9/11 and deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic. A notable post from September 11, 2021, uncovered by The Washington Free Beacon, stated, “Today, I mourn the 3K lives, 6K injuries, & infrastructural devastation in NYC, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my faith. Tomorrow, I’ll mourn ~1M lives, millions of injuries, & infrastructural devastation in 3 countries, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my country.”

Some critics expressed concern over linking El-Sayed, potentially the first Muslim Democratic senator, to the upcoming 9/11 anniversary. Hasan Piker, a prominent left-wing commentator, called the headline “insane.” Others, like Mehdi Hasan, questioned the sensitivity of the references made in the report.

Bari Weiss, recently appointed CBS News’ editor-in-chief as part of Paramount’s acquisition strategy, was brought up by critics in response to the report. Tim Miller of The Bulwark labeled the headline “blatantly racist,” while other commentators voiced disappointment in the current state of major media outlets.

A CBS News insider downplayed the backlash, explaining to Fox News Digital that reports of deleted posts from political figures are routine. While on the campaign trail, El-Sayed addressed the issue, labeling the 9/11 attacks as a “terrible attack” and emphasizing America’s need to avoid needless wars.
