Challenges in Maintaining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, recently renovated, faces issues with algal bloom. Workers are addressing this problem days after a renovation worth over $14 million aimed to enhance its appearance.

Renovation and Challenges

The pool, intended to have a vibrant blue bottom, has turned chartreuse because of algae. The vast structure, larger than 10 Olympic-sized pools, presents unique maintenance challenges.

Water from the Tidal Basin, known for poor water quality, contributes to the issue. Algae have been a persistent problem since the pool’s inception over a century ago. Enhancing Washington’s beauty for the country’s 250th anniversary, President Donald Trump focused on the pool’s restoration. Inspired by feedback from a German friend, he initiated the project to improve the pool’s dark and unappealing condition.

Efforts to Control Algae

Teams of National Park Service employees and contractors use chemicals and ozone nanobubbles to control algae. The ozone treatment is similar to methods used before the renovation commenced. President of the Pool Service Company, Cochise Wanzer II, explains the difficulty due to the pool receiving untreated river water. With the newly painted dark bottom, algae growth is more prominent as it elevates water temperature, enhancing growth conditions.

Workers use swimming pool-type vacuum cleaners to remove algae, revealing spots of the American Flag Blue paint amidst algae-covered areas. The park service utilizes hydrogen peroxide for treatment, which is milder than chlorine and safe for marine life and the environment. Water is being pumped out to continue cleaning efforts.

On-Site Cleaning Operations

During cleaning, a contractor wades into the pool to place an ozone nanobubble tube while tourists watch. Among them are Rick and Ariana Pettit from Las Vegas, who, dressed in patriotic attire, appreciate the gradual improvement in the pool’s appearance.

Wanzer suggests another maintenance strategy: draining the pool and refilling it with treated water. This might be necessary to keep the iconic site algae-free and visually appealing.
