Reports indicate that laws in approximately 20 states present challenges in prosecuting sexual assault cases, particularly when accusers have voluntarily consumed alcohol or drugs. Such legal barriers complicate achieving justice in these instances.
Recently, allegations of a gang rape in 2024 at Cornell University have gained attention. The incident brings a sense of horror and recognition for individuals like Summer Willis. Years ago, Willis faced a similar situation after her own assault in 2014.
In both cases, vulgar exchanges on platforms like Snapchat occurred. Fraternity members at Cornell reportedly exchanged inappropriate messages about the accuser, much like what happened following Willis’s assault.
Compounding these challenges, district attorneys have pointed out that state laws make filing charges difficult or sometimes impossible. This legal hurdle mirrors the experience Willis had when she sought justice years prior.
“There were fraternity brothers exchanging vulgar messages about the accuser, echoing my own past experiences,” recounts Willis.
