Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has faced significant challenges lately. Over the summer, he made headlines for being arrested in Wisconsin for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Police body cam footage of the incident went viral, leading to widespread internet memes.
In addition to his legal troubles, Romo’s future as a CBS Sports football analyst came into question. The network placed him on indefinite leave, and they eventually agreed to a mutual separation in early October. This decision not only impacted Romo’s career but also left him with unpaid millions from his contract. His analysis style had recently faced criticism from fans.
On the same day of his departure from CBS, Romo encountered a setback in his golfing pursuits. Known for his golfing skills, he participated in a pre-qualifier for a Korn Ferry Tour event. Despite not reaching the PGA or Champions Tour level, his participation was notable for an amateur golfer.
However, Romo’s disqualification from this pre-qualifier was less impressive. Held at the Club at Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, he was accused of signing an incorrect scorecard. Despite starting with rounds of 76 and 75, a discrepancy arose during the third round about his scores on the 16th and 17th holes.
“Three people had three different versions of Romo’s score in that third round,” reported Golf.com.
Romo recorded a 4 on both holes, but his playing partner, Brandon Rice, noted a 5 on the 17th. A PGA professional and referee also recalled different scores, reporting 5 on both holes. Rob Keller, the pre-qualifier administrator, speculated that Romo’s preoccupation with his personal challenges and slow play could have led him to overlook checking the scorecard thoroughly.
Keller recognized Romo’s responsibility in the matter and acknowledged his praise for the tournament’s quality. Unfortunately, even with the corrected score, Romo wouldn’t have advanced. This series of events casts doubt on Romo’s prospects for a post-CBS career in golf.
Ian Miller, writing for OutKick, noted that golf might not be a feasible career path for Romo following his television career.
