The Chicago Bulls faced a challenging game against the Boston Celtics in a 125-111 loss. Rookie Caleb Wilson made a desperate attempt to spark the team by reaching for an offensive rebound early in the game. Despite their determination, the Bulls encountered a significant deficit in the first quarter. Their relentless pursuit of second-chance opportunities helped them to win the second half, contributing 25 points to the team’s total.
Head coach Tiago Splitter emphasized the importance of rebounding in preseason, expecting players to take charge of their individual responsibilities. Although ranking tenth in the league with 45.8 total rebounds per game, the Bulls struggle with rebounding percentages. They capture only 65.6% of defensive rebounds, highlighting their difficulty against bigger teams.
Splitter acknowledges the team’s youth and potential for improvement, pointing out Tobe Awaka as a standout player for his consistent effort. Leonard Miller and Caleb Wilson also show promise due to their size advantage, yet guards like Josh Giddey have seen declines in rebounding numbers.
Giddey’s dropped performance stems partly from reduced playing time. He averages three fewer rebounds per game compared to last year. Splitter’s system demands more from guards, introducing a new focus on boxing out. This adjustment challenges Giddey’s usual approach, causing a break in rhythm.
Some veteran players, including Norman Powell, resist blaming the new scheme for rebounding struggles. Powell notes the tendency to ball-watch, emphasizing the need for players to find and box out opponents. The absence of center Nic Claxton due to injury, who averaged 6.9 boards last season for the Brooklyn Nets, remains problematic. Although Claxton is a rim protector, his rebounding efficiency comes into question.
For the Bulls, addressing rebounding issues cannot wait. Powell stresses the urgency, stating, “The timeline needs to be next game.” He highlights the importance of effort and competitiveness as immediate goals, contrasting these with offensive execution that requires more time.
