Christian Communities in Israel Face Challenges Amid Rising Tensions

In Israel, Christians, less than 2% of the population, face growing tensions. As conflicts increase, visible expressions of Christian faith risk harassment. Sister Mayela, a nun in Jerusalem, experiences these challenges directly. Accompanied by a Jewish volunteer, she still encounters hostility, such as a teenager spitting behind her—a sign of the escalating incidents targeting Christians.

The situation has worsened since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack. Despite this, interfaith leaders appreciate improved law enforcement and a new government envoy to the Christian community, a Greek Orthodox, who aims to enhance Christian safety in Israel.

In northern Israel, Christians report inadequate state protection due to their non-Jewish identity. Yet, they maintain their traditions, as evidenced by Catholic pilgrimages to Mount Tabor. Here, the Gospels recount Jesus appearing transfigured alongside Moses and Elijah.

The Old City of Jerusalem illustrates a daily coexistence among different faiths. Religious individuals navigate shared spaces like the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. However, incidents of spitting and disrespect are common, indicating underlying tensions.

“Walking in habits often leads to spitting incidents,” said Rev. Alberto Pari, involved in interfaith dialogue. He stresses the importance of not generalizing these acts to avoid fostering antisemitism.

The Religious Freedom Data Center tracks harassment, noting a significant rise in incidents, mostly perpetuated by Jewish nationalists. A recent violent attack on a nun led to the indictment of a West Bank settler, underscoring the complex dynamics in Israeli society.

Internationally condemned acts, such as desecration of Christian symbols by soldiers, resulted in military penalties, highlighting internal efforts to address these behaviors.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict exacerbates Christian-Jewish tensions, with Palestinian Christians enduring additional challenges. In Taybeh, a Christian village, settlers have destroyed property, leading to increased fear among residents. Israel responded by designating the village a closed military zone.

Despite challenges, Christians in the area remain committed to their faith and identity. At Mount Tabor, pilgrims continue their traditions, celebrating the feast of the Transfiguration, demonstrating resilience and hope for change.
