Christian Gym Seeks to Eliminate Temptation from Fitness Environment

Jeff Hambrecht, the owner of Proverbs 27:17, a Christian gym in Oklahoma City, aims to reduce distractions caused by lust while exercising. His men’s-only facility has drawn both support and criticism.

Many Americans work out in co-ed gyms, but some men find this setting distracting. They seek gyms that offer a “lust-free” environment. Hambrecht described his gym to Fox News Digital, explaining that it is not just about avoiding temptation. He likened it to an alcoholic avoiding triggers. “If you’re struggling with pornography and lust, why return to a place that might lead to trouble? I removed that risk,” he said.

Jeff Hambrecht, through his own recovery journey from addiction, seeks to help others find community, face stigmas, and address mental health struggles in a supportive environment.

Hambrecht’s mission is to create a space for men to be vulnerable and faith-focused. “I saw a gap where men couldn’t be open and connect with God among peers,” he explained. The gym aims to change how members perceive relationships and life from a biblical perspective.

In contrast, Kim Abt owns PWRGRLS gym in Sherman Oaks, California, a women-only gym. She finds the idea of gender-segregated gyms “fair,” noting that her clients often feel intimidated in regular gyms. Class attendance quickly reached capacity, with many women citing past harassment as a reason for joining. Abt highlighted the importance of community for her clients.

Fitness influencer Brad Jensen, also known as “thesoberbodybuilder,” commented on Proverbs 27:17’s concept. He empathizes with both sides of the debate. “I understand why women want women-only gyms,” Jensen said. “A Christian gym with a dress code and shared values might work without excluding women,” he suggested.

Jensen also observed that some workout attire can cross a line of respect. “There are social media trends that disrespect others in public gyms. There’s a fine line between personal expression and making others uncomfortable,” he noted.
