Colton Ludwig’s Impactful Performances Propel Kaneland Knights

1 hour ago 0

Kaneland High School senior Colton Ludwig might not be the biggest player on the field, but his dedication and performance make him stand out. With a height of 5-foot-7 and weighing 140 pounds, Ludwig has proven his prowess, especially in recent games.

Despite his size, Ludwig tackles challenges head-on. “It’s my favorite thing to do,” Ludwig stated. “I love it.” His motivation comes from refusing to let his size limit him, showing no fear when running the ball. “No one really frightens me on the defense. Just run hard, run through people,” he said.

Ludwig has been instrumental in the Knights’ successful run, showcasing remarkable skills with consecutive 200-yard rushing games. Heading into the season’s regular finale against Metea Valley, Ludwig nears the 1,000-yard mark. His coach, Mike Thorgesen, praises his ability on the field. “He’s just running his tail off, running through people. The offensive line is doing a great job, but he’s doing the rest,” Thorgesen commented.

Thorgesen admires Ludwig’s gritty approach. “He’s just tough, runs low, kind of a fearless running,” he noted. Ludwig has adapted from a previous tendency to move outside, now committing to straightforward running paths. This determination has made him hard to tackle.

Following his outstanding performances against LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa, Ludwig leads the team with 896 yards and nine touchdowns on 109 carries. Behind him, sophomore Timmy Boryc has accumulated 496 yards and five touchdowns on 55 carries, while linebacker Jackson Little, known for his physical play, has scored eight touchdowns.

Ludwig’s recent achievements include scoring on a 60-yard run right at the start of a game. “They’re just giving me the ball,” Ludwig explained. “I’m running through people. It’s been a great couple of weeks.” He sees the increased carries and trusting the openings as key factors.

“We have three good running backs,” Thorgesen said. “Colton has taken the lead. Timmy is doing a good job. Jackson can get the tough yards. (Ludwig) is the hot hand.”

Kaneland’s offensive capabilities extend beyond running. The team has shown versatility with its passing game. Quarterback Brody Guthrie has completed 72 of 116 passes for 1,387 yards and 17 touchdowns. Notable receivers include Cooper Stombres with 20 catches for 428 yards and Colton VanDyke, who has 19 catches despite a recent injury.

Thorgesen values the team’s adaptability in gameplay. “Some of the games, we threw the ball a lot,” he said, emphasizing the balanced strategy. Ludwig acknowledges the advantage of the strong receiving team, noting the defense must focus on other threats like Cooper Stombres and Colton VanDyke.

Facing Class 8A Metea Valley poses a unique challenge for the Class 5A Knights. “This is a real interesting game for us,” Thorgesen stated. The team views it as a pre-playoff trial, aiming for a strong playoff run. Ludwig remains optimistic, eager for the challenges ahead. “I’m excited to see what’s to come. I’m sure we’ll go far in the playoffs,” he shared.
