Some congressional Democrats expressed renewed concerns about Graham Platner, the presumed Senate nominee for the Democratic Party in Maine. This follows reports of several women describing volatile and “toxic” relationships with him. Simultaneously, others continue to support his candidacy.
The reactions came over the weekend, seen on Sunday morning news shows and social media, reflecting a party wrestling with Platner’s campaign in a key Senate battleground mere days before Tuesday’s primary election. Notably, Representative Ro Khanna from California, a strong supporter of Platner, stated his belief in a woman’s account accusing Platner of physically threatening behavior. Khanna urged Platner’s campaign to avoid criticizing her.
A report from The New York Times on Thursday detailed claims from three women who dated Platner, stating he was volatile in relationships and demeaning towards women. This follows previous revelations on May 30 that Platner exchanged sexual messages with women outside his marriage as recently as last year.
Senator Mark Warner from Virginia, a centrist Democrat, labeled the allegations as “beyond disturbing” during an appearance on Fox News. Warner mentioned, “If these allegations are true, they’re very troubling. But I don’t know if they are true or not. I think, frankly, the people in Maine ought to decide that.”
Platner’s campaign has countered, stating he “strongly disputes” any claims of physical intimidation or altercations. A Marine Corps veteran with Iraq deployment, Platner has admitted to previous struggles with PTSD, stating he “self-medicated with alcohol and was a far from perfect boyfriend” during a “very dark period” that preceded his “transformation.” He labeled reports about his sexual messages as distractions from issues voters care about.
