Conservative Groups Support ABC Against FCC’s Public License Review

Conservative advocacy groups have found common ground with ABC, defending the network in its ongoing conflict with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced in April that eight ABC-owned stations need to demonstrate their operations serve the public interest. This arises from an examination of Disney’s diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.

Carr criticized ABC for not broadcasting former President Donald Trump’s primetime address, arguing it was not in the public interest. In response, several conservative and free-market organizations, including the Center for Individual Freedom, Citizens Against Government Waste, and Americans for Tax Reform, urged Carr to avoid setting a precedent that might negatively affect non-liberal media in the future.

The letter stated: “We ask that the FCC avoid steps that would transform renewal from the largely ministerial process Congress designed into a discretionary checkpoint that would invite the politicization conservatives, free-market advocates, and others have long condemned.”

The letter emphasized that non-routine renewal could become a powerful tool for future FCCs hostile to conservative broadcasters. It stressed the importance of maintaining a predictable renewal process to protect broadcasters under the Telecommunications Act of 1996, allowing them to serve communities without fear of license loss.

ABC has launched an on-air campaign urging viewers to support “The View” amid the FCC’s probe. This investigation assesses ABC’s policies on providing equal air time to political candidates, sparked by Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico’s appearance.

Conservative leaders, including those from the National Taxpayers Union and Taxpayers Protection Alliance, signed the letter supporting ABC’s license renewal against potential political bias.

Despite the expedited license renewal process for stations such as KABC-TV in Los Angeles and WABC-TV in New York, there is a shared concern that the FCC’s actions might set unfavorable precedents.

ABC hosts programs like “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Good Morning America.” The network argues that “The View” qualifies as news content, exempting it from the equal time rule.
