Controversial officiating is not exclusive to the NFL or NBA, as seen during the recent Undisputed WWE Championship match. Cody Rhodes faced Gunther on Sunday at the Clash in Italy, held at Inalpi Arena in Torino di Sangro, where the referee made a questionable call.
During the match, Rhodes delivered a second Cross Rhodes to Gunther, leaving Gunther close to the ropes. Rhodes pinned Gunther, and the referee, Dan Engler, began his count. The broadcast showed Gunther’s foot under the ropes, which typically breaks the count. However, Engler didn’t notice as he focused on Rhodes’ pin.
As Engler completed the count, Gunther was visibly surprised, indicating that his foot was under the ropes. With Gunther’s arms gesturing towards Engler, the match outcome was disputed. Despite Gunther’s protests, Rhodes celebrated, maintaining his championship in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Rhodes won the title from Drew McIntyre earlier in the month and was defending it for the second time. Gunther had earned his opportunity by defeating Royce Keys two weeks prior. Although initially hesitant to sign the match contract, Gunther secured his title shot when Keys was poised to take his place.
Throughout the lead-up, Gunther expressed concerns about Rhodes dominating “Friday Night SmackDown.” With the controversial match now over, Gunther’s grievance regarding the referee decision gives him grounds for complaint. The timeline for Gunther’s next title opportunity remains uncertain.
