Controversy Surrounding Lindsay Clancy’s Trial

Podcaster Joe Rogan criticized supporters of Lindsay Clancy during an episode of the “Joe Rogan Experience.” Clancy, a former nurse from Duxbury, Massachusetts, is on trial for the murder of her three children at home in January 2023. She faces charges of first-degree murder and admits to the killings. However, she argues that postpartum psychosis influenced her actions, rendering her not criminally responsible.

A significant aspect of the trial is the support Clancy has received. Many women have rallied on social media, sharing support or conspiracy theories about her case. Rogan commented on the situation, expressing disbelief at the backing Clancy has received. He stated, “this lady killed her kids and everyone’s like, ‘Oh my God, she needed help.’ Imagine if a single father killed his kids. Do you think there’d be any dads out there? ‘We get it. We understand. I also get sad!’”

Rogan further criticized Clancy’s supporters, stating that if they witnessed the crime scene, their view might change. “If those ladies could see the crime scene and see those dead kids with their f—ing vacant eyes staring up because their mother took their life, the last f—ing thing that they saw was their mother standing over them, choking them to death, I don’t think they would feel so bad.”

He expressed concerns about modern politics and the state of the world, describing the social media phenomenon surrounding the case as absurd. He commented, “People are out of their f—ing mind right now. She’s out of her f—ing mind. The world is out of its f—ing mind. It’s like more of these things come up where you’re like, ‘This can’t be real. This can’t be real.’ And it is real.”

Later during the podcast, Rogan addressed the radicalization of certain groups, particularly childless liberal women. He suggested that these individuals often treat global issues as their child, worrying over various societal concerns like environment and rights.

“I don’t want to generalize, but it seems like it’s Republicans too, but it’s a lot of liberal women,” Rogan stated. “Liberal women with no children want to turn the world into their children.”

The case has prompted various responses, including from Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring, a psychiatrist, who criticized the social media spectacle. He warned against treating Clancy like a hero, emphasizing that the deaths of three children should not be overshadowed by misguided narratives. Witt-Doerring highlighted the risk of framing Clancy as a victim of mental health issues without considering evidence.

He added that the support for Clancy often focuses on the difficulties of the postpartum period, demonstrating an understanding of the trials many women face. However, he warned against making broad assumptions and urged people to consider medical and legal evidence.

Mary Marslender, a former GOP consultant, echoed Rogan’s sentiments, critiquing the apparent double standard in reactions to the crime based on gender. She stated, “Joe Rogan is spot on. Would there be a supporter rally for a father who committed the same act? Of course not.” She suggested that men would not receive the same empathy or support.

Marslender emphasized that recognizing the flaws in the psychiatric system should not lead to idolizing individuals who commit heinous acts. She pointed to the need for remembering the humanity of the victims and questioned the societal benefit of such movements.
