A couple intending to relocate from California to North Carolina found themselves in a difficult situation when their moving company significantly increased the cost of their move. John Nelson and his wife, moving from Oceanside, claim their belongings are effectively being held by the moving company due to a pricing dispute.
The original agreement, according to CBS 8, was for a full-service move priced slightly over $16,000. The couple paid a $7,000 deposit as part of this agreement. However, on the moving day, the company reportedly adjusted the cost to $32,000, citing that the couple had more items for transport than initially estimated.
Despite his reluctance, Nelson chose to proceed with the move to prevent losing their initial deposit. Yet, he later accused the company of attempting to impose further fees upon delivery.
According to the Nelsons, the company attempted an early delivery on June 3, one week before the agreed date for receiving their belongings. As the couple was not ready to receive them, this led to the contractors charging a redelivery fee, as reported by CBS 8. Quotes from Nelson describe the situation as feeling like their items are being held ‘for ransom,’ emphasizing the distress caused by the ongoing ordeal.
The delivery attempt is suspected by Nelson to have been staged to enforce the additional fees. Allegedly, the truck captured on video did not correspond with the vehicle used initially for loading. He believes the truck was empty, staged to pressure them.
Nelson and his wife took action by filing police reports in Oceanside as well as in their new location in North Carolina. Furthermore, they filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) regarding the situation. Notably, over the past three years, the moving broker involved has accumulated 280 complaints with the BBB, hinting at a pattern of customer dissatisfaction.
The broker contends the couple’s accusations, but reportedly states that efforts are being made to resolve the issue.
