Cowboys Acquire Joey Porter Jr., Aiming for Quick Impact

56 minutes ago 0

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Wednesday that Joey Porter Jr. was designated out against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night Football. This decision was attributed to both non-injury related conditioning and a back injury. Porter participated only partially in Wednesday’s practice session. Shortly after this update, the Steelers finalized a trade, sending Porter to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2028 second-round pick and a conditional sixth-round pick in 2027.

A source disclosed to Newsweek that Porter is anticipated to play in the Cowboys’ away game against the Houston Texans on Sunday. It is yet to be determined if he will start or how extensively he will play in Week 5 as he adapts to defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s strategies. Though official confirmation awaits, Porter’s involvement in critical plays is expected, contributing promptly to a team dealing with several injuries in its secondary.

This move comes ahead of a significant matchup against an 0-3 Texans squad led by quarterback C.J. Stroud. Nico Collins, the Texans’ wide receiver, may return from a hamstring injury. Questions linger over Porter’s back injury, with some sources labeling the issue as negligible compared to a true reason for sitting out.

Porter missed substantial preseason preparations and the first three regular-season games while navigating a contract dispute and the back injury designation. His arrival is crucial as Dallas faces a pivotal matchup. The Texans, initially viewed as strong playoff contenders due to defensive and offseason enhancements, are determined to avoid a damaging 0-4 start.

Should the Cowboys lose, their record would fall to 1-3, a scenario they wish to avoid. Adding Porter, even as a possible one-year asset, aims to remedy recent defensive shortcomings observed in their Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Competing closely with teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off a Monday Night Football loss to the Chicago Bears, necessitates swift enhancements. The Eagles next face the 1-2 Los Angeles Rams, putting further pressure on Dallas.

Porter, in his contract’s final year before hitting free agency in 2027, expressed readiness to contribute. “I’m feeling good,” Porter mentioned via the Cowboys’ website. “I’ll talk to the guys. I just arrived today, and we’re taking it one step at a time. If everything checks out, I should play.” Dallas currently has no urgency to extend Porter’s contract but hopes his addition will pay dividends on the field.
