This past Saturday, Cuban dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara arrived at Miami International Airport after serving a five-year prison sentence in Cuba. The 38-year-old was released on the condition that he leave his home country. His arrival in the United States was met with crowds celebrating and documenting the moment with their phones. Supporters welcomed him by draping a Cuban flag bearing the words “Patria y Vida” — the title of the Grammy-winning song that has become emblematic of Cuban political resistance.
The U.S. granted Alcántara parole earlier this week, according to information shared on a social media page by his friends and supporters. Alcántara accepted exile as a means to continue his work without persecution. He played a significant role in founding the San Isidro Movement, a collective of Havana-based artists, writers, and musicians named after Alcántara’s neighborhood.
Authorities arrested him on July 11, 2021, during a protest, and in 2022, a court sentenced him to five years for charges related to public disorder and disrespect for national symbols. Both human rights organizations and the U.S. government condemned his arrest and imprisonment. Groups like Amnesty International labeled him a political prisoner, a claim disputed by the Cuban government.
Alcántara was confined in a maximum-security prison. Initially expected to be released last week, his whereabouts remained unclear for several days. On Monday, Cubalex, an organization providing legal counsel to dissidents, filed a habeas corpus petition for Alcántara. His location became known only upon his boarding a flight to the U.S. on Saturday.
Alcántara’s first destination upon arriving was the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity to make an offering. He carried a broken statue of the Virgin Mary from Cuba, which he described as a symbol of hope and the possibility of restoration. Advocates noted that other political prisoners, including artist Maykel “Osorbo” Castillo Pérez, remain incarcerated. They express hope that Alcántara’s release will spark efforts for Pérez’s freedom as well.
