Manager Craig Counsell commented on Busch’s mistake, saying, “That was bad, that was a dumb play … I’ll take responsibility for it.” Busch admitted to the error, acknowledging that he must be sure to secure bases.

Seiya Suzuki’s mixed performance continued; after an early go-ahead two-run single, he struck out thrice, including once with bases loaded. Manager Counsell stated, “We had the right guys up. We just didn’t get the hits tonight.”

Pitching Woes

Right-hander Clay Holmes faced command issues, walking five batters and giving up six runs in 5 1/3 innings. His throwing error contributed to a dire sixth inning where the Reds gained the lead. Holmes admitted needing improvement in finishing outings by cleaning up errors and making key pitches.

Playoff Race Intensifies

Despite the loss, the Cubs still have opportunities with eight games remaining to gain playoff momentum. The Arizona Diamondbacks’ loss helped reduce the magic number for clinching a playoff spot to three, while a tie in wild-card standings with the Phillies following their loss offers hope.

Carson Kelly emphasized the importance of focusing on each day without looking too far ahead. “I think what makes this team really good is handling every single day as it is,” he said.
