D.C. Mayoral Candidate and the Proposal for a Salary Increase

1 hour ago 0

D.C. council member Anita Bonds has proposed raising the next mayor’s salary to $290,000, a considerable increase of $40,000. This move positions the city’s mayor as one of the country’s highest-paid leaders. Janeese Lewis George, the Democratic nominee and likely victor in the upcoming election, stands to benefit from this change.

The proposed figure surpasses the current salary of New York’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who earns $258,750. New York’s population is over 8.5 million, contrasting with D.C.’s approximately 700,000 residents. The top mayoral salary is in San Francisco at $383,760, though Mayor Daniel Lurie performs the role largely as a symbolic gesture, receiving $1 annually. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass receives $318,000.

New York’s Mamdani refused a raise to $305,800 despite his entitlement due to perks like residing rent-free in Gracie Mansion. Lewis George, also a democratic socialist, has publicly stated her opposition to the pay raise. She emphasized the financial strain on city families over childcare, housing, and utility costs, refusing to add to their burden for the mayor’s role.
