Dabo Swinney’s Decline in College Football Rankings

1 hour ago 0

In the late 2010s, Dabo Swinney, head coach of the Clemson Tigers, was often compared to Nick Saban. Under his leadership, Clemson competed in four national championships over five years, winning titles in 2016 and 2018. Clemson even appeared in the College Football Playoff during the 2024 season.

However, The Athletic recently lowered Swinney’s ranking among college coaches, citing a disappointing 2025 season. The Tigers, starting as the No. 4 team, with quarterback Cade Klubnik in the running for the Heisman, faced swift setbacks. Losses to LSU, Georgia Tech, and Syracuse left them at 3-5, although they finished the regular season with four straight wins. Clemson’s effort wasn’t enough as they lost the Pinstripe Bowl to Penn State.

“Dabo Swinney drops out of the top tier for the first time since this exercise began,” wrote Chris Vannini of The Athletic. “He has two national titles, but the last one was eight years ago.”

Clemson’s performance has consistently declined over the past decade. The team went from losing one or two games per season to losing more frequently. Last season culminated in a 7-6 record, Swinney’s worst since 2010. Despite past successes, the Tigers aren’t meeting the standards set by previous years and appear to be on a downward trend.

Adding to the disappointment is Brent Venables, Swinney’s former defensive coordinator, leading the Oklahoma Sooners to last year’s College Football Playoff. Although the Sooners suffered a setback against Alabama, optimism persists in Norman, bolstered by quarterback John Mateer and his teammates.

In contrast, Clemson entered this season without being ranked for the first time in 15 years. Even Nick Saban expressed uncertainty about Clemson’s prospects. On “The Pat McAfee Show,” he remarked, “I think we’ll see if they’re back. [Swinney and team] got a lot of question marks, whether it’s quarterback, and they got a lot of holes to fill.”

If Clemson’s struggles continue, Swinney’s reputation may face further decline.
