Dallas Cowboys Sign Von Miller, Release Sam Williams

The Dallas Cowboys, in their quest for a seasoned defensive end, initially expressed interest in Maxx Crosby early in the offseason. After trading Micah Parsons the previous year, the team sought reinforcements for their defensive edge.

The Cowboys ultimately secured Von Miller with a one-year contract valued at up to $7.5 million. As a consequence, the team released Sam Williams, as reported by Todd Archer of ESPN. The decision was partly due to the addition of Miller.

“Sources: The Cowboys have released veteran edge rusher Sam Williams, who signed a one-year deal with $2 million guaranteed in March,” Archer shared on X. “Von Miller addition took away an edge rusher spot on the 53.”

Williams, who joined the Cowboys as a second-round pick in 2022, recorded 85 tackles, three forced fumbles, 22 tackles for loss, and 9.5 sacks during his tenure with the team. In the 2025 season, he played in all 17 games and started in five.

Williams felt pressure to secure a spot on the 53-man roster during training camp. He shared how it motivated him to enhance his performance.

“I took all the reports, all the negative comments, everything,” Williams commented via KLTV.com. “And I took it in and I looked at myself in the mirror because you can’t get better unless you know what you’re doing wrong. So everything that I’ve seen, I try to fix. Like even in my room, it’s written on the mirror.”

“At the end of the day, I just took all the negatives and, you know, look myself in the mirror. Not blaming no one else and just work. Just work, work, work. Put my head down and let my work speak for itself.”

It remains uncertain if Williams will attract interest from other NFL teams seeking a defensive end prior to the regular season kickoff. He had a notable performance in 2023 with 26 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Unfortunately, he missed the 2024 season due to injuries sustained in training camp. He suffered a torn ACL and a partially torn MCL.
