Darline Graham Receives Support from Trump for Senate Run

In Columbia, S.C., President Donald Trump announced his endorsement of Darline Graham, sister of the late Lindsey Graham, to run for the U.S. Senate. Trump expressed his support on social media, praising her as a lifelong winner and encouraging her candidacy.

President Trump confirmed his discussion with Darline Graham about a potential campaign during a meeting at the White House. Sources close to the matter revealed she had privately shown interest in entering the race. This endorsement shifts the dynamics in the contest to fill Lindsey Graham’s seat following his passing last weekend. Earlier, Trump had hinted at supporting Rep. Russell Fry.

Other candidates considering a run include Rep. Nancy Mace, Rep. Ralph Norman, and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. The special primary filing period is from July 21 to July 28, with the primary scheduled for August 11. Arrangements for Lindsey Graham’s funeral services were disclosed, with ceremonies planned in Washington on July 28 and in South Carolina on July 29.

Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham to complete her brother’s term until January, marking her as South Carolina’s first female senator. During a news conference, she expressed her honor, surrounded by Lindsey Graham’s staff members and advisors.

Sen. Lindsey Graham was a significant figure in politics, never marrying or having children, but his sister played a pivotal role in his career. Following the death of their parents, Lindsey Graham, then her legal guardian, adopted her to secure his military benefits for her.

Trump’s endorsement suggests a strategic alliance with Darline Graham to further his Senate agenda. Although he had a complex relationship with Lindsey Graham, Trump described him as family after his passing.

Governor McMaster made no mention of Darline Graham’s appointment as temporary. However, insiders noted he didn’t initially expect her to pursue the Senate seat.

Sen. Tim Scott, leading the National Republican Senatorial Committee, chose not to officially endorse anyone. However, as a voter, he might support a candidate later. Scott praised Darline Graham’s promising start and remarked on the possibility of her candidacy.

Lindsey Graham had accumulated substantial campaign funds, but federal regulations restrict Darline Graham’s access to these resources if she runs. Former FEC Chairman Bradley A. Smith explained that Lindsey’s campaign can only transfer $2,000 to Darline’s campaign directly. However, funds can be transferred to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which may then coordinate spending with Darline’s campaign.
