David Morales Wins Providence Democratic Primary

Rhode Island State Representative David Morales, a 27-year-old democratic socialist, successfully defeated the incumbent mayor, Brett Smiley, in the Democratic primary for Providence. Endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, Morales aims to become the youngest mayor in the city’s history if he wins the general election.

“Few believed that a 27-year-old democratic socialist could ever, few believed that we could ever take on big money, corporate real estate interests and endless attack ads – and we took them on and we won,” Morales said in his victory speech. He secured victory by approximately eight points.

Morales will face Republican nominee Dave Talan, who is 77 years old, in the upcoming election. Republicans currently have no seats on the Providence City Council, and the voter base leans heavily Democratic.

The primary featured a contest of progressive ideals versus traditional approaches. Morales campaigned on a platform of rent control, affordable housing, and higher taxes on polluters, while Smiley emphasized his experience.

A contentious topic in the primary was rent stabilization. The Providence City Council had approved measures to cap rent increases, but Smiley vetoed these efforts. Morales highlighted this issue, pushing for a cap on rent hikes to protect residents from rising costs.

Morales also advocates for Providence to be a sanctuary city, opposing federal immigration enforcement. He emphasizes his commitment to defending the city’s immigrant community.
