On Wednesday, a tragic incident unfolded when an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter from Fort Hood crashed in Central Texas. The crash resulted in the deaths of two individuals and ignited a wildfire in the area, demanding a prompt response from emergency services.

Cliff Coleman from the Bell County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a call about the crash at around 1:34 p.m. The helicopter went down in a field south of Salado, located roughly 30 minutes from Fort Hood. The incident occurred near Dove Hollow Lane, according to KWTX.

“Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts,” stated Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, acting commanding general.

The crash was described as violent by Coleman, confirming the loss of two lives with no additional injuries reported. Although it was initially believed to involve a helicopter from Fort Hood, official confirmation came later. Fort Hood verified that the aircraft was indeed an AH-64 Apache from their installation. The identities of the deceased individuals remain undisclosed.

In a statement, Fort Hood mentioned that various local emergency, military, and law enforcement agencies were actively addressing the situation. They also declared the incident as developing and promised more details as they became available.

The crash resulted in a wildfire, complicating the emergency response. It led to road closures and the evacuation of some residents. By 4 p.m. ET, the fire was still uncontained, with local authorities shutting down Farm to Market Road 2843 close to the crash scene.

The Salado Fire/Bell County ESD #1 addressed the public about a significant grass fire along FM 2843. They advised drivers to seek alternative routes, warning that the affected roadway was not passable due to emergency operations.

Authorities stated that Fort Hood is spearheading the investigation into this unfortunate event. Although the cause of the crash remains unknown, efforts are ongoing to gather more information.

Abhiram Garapati, a Republican congressional candidate in Texas, conveyed his condolences to those affected by the incident and expressed appreciation for the first responders. “My prayers are with those aboard, the first responders responding to the scene, and any individuals affected by the fire,” he mentioned in a Facebook post.

As the investigation progresses, more details are expected to emerge regarding the crash and ensuing events.
