Deadly Russian Missile Strikes in Kyiv Region

On August 5, 2026, Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and its surrounding areas resulted in the death of 17 people and injured 44 others, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The assault involved 24 ballistic missiles, four hypersonic Zircons or supersonic Oniks missiles, and 115 jet-powered drones.

The strikes primarily hit civilian business warehouses, infrastructure, and a railway station, notably affecting a brewing company and logistics facilities. President Zelenskyy stated these sites had no connection to the ongoing conflict.

The attacks follow a disturbing pattern of significant Russian missile strikes that have become almost routine this summer. Ukraine’s defense relies on limited U.S.-made Patriot interceptor missiles, the only system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, making it challenging to counter such large-scale volleys.

“Ballistic interceptors are what could have saved the lives of those killed today. It is very important for our partners to understand that delays in supplying them, or a reluctance to hand over anti-ballistic systems, lead directly to such horrific casualties and destruction,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram.

In the broader Kyiv region, fires were reported in Brovary, Bucha, and Fastiv districts. Emergency services extinguished large warehouse fires in Velyka Dymerka, Kvitneve, and Peremoha. In Fastiv, a vehicle fire was put out, and in Bucha, crews handled a warehouse fire in Chaiky.

In Kyiv, emergency responders managed fires in the Obolonskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Desnianskyi districts. Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine’s president on defense technology, noted the war of attrition had entered a new phase, with indiscriminate attacks on various facilities.

Epicentr, one of Ukraine’s largest retail and construction chains, suffered significant damage. One employee was killed, and three were injured when its logistics hubs and ceramic tile factory were hit. The hit forced the company to halt production and plan for recovery, which could take up to two years.

In retaliation, Ukraine has targeted Russian retail logistics, damaging warehouses owned by Wildberries, a major Russian retailer, in efforts to impact Moscow’s economy and highlight the conflict’s costs to Russians.
