James Talarico has made significant progress in the competitive Texas Senate race. Prediction markets and election analysts now increasingly view the contest as closely contested, challenging its traditional Republican inclination.
Kalshi, a prediction market, assesses Democratic State Representative Talarico’s chances at 59 percent to win the November election, compared to the 41 percent probability for Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. Polymarket similarly forecasts Talarico at 60 percent and Paxton at 41 percent, acknowledging that prediction market shares can sometimes exceed 100 percent due to market spreads.
Fox News’ Power Rankings have upgraded the Texas Senate race from leaning Republican to a toss-up. Similarly, the Cook Political Report recently reclassified the contest as a toss-up, changing its earlier lean Republican rating.
Polling expert Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin model also transitioned Texas into the lean Democrat category, estimating Talarico’s winning likelihood around 70 percent versus Paxton’s 30 percent. Silver noted in an August 25 post that even while Texas remains a predominantly red state, Ken Paxton’s scandals contrasted with Talarico’s impressive fundraising grant a candidate quality advantage to Democrats, according to polling data.
RealClearPolling corroborates the competitiveness of the race, showing Talarico at 47.6 percent and Paxton at 45 percent. Newsweek reached out to both Talarico and Paxton campaigns for comment and awaits responses.
The heated campaign has seen exchanges between Talarico and Paxton both in rallies and online. Talarico recently highlighted a spelling error by Paxton, who mistakenly referred to the Houston-area community of Cypress as ‘Cyprus’ in a now-deleted post. Talarico responded, ‘It’s Cypress, not Cyprus. With your frequent luxury trips to Europe, it’s unsurprising you’re unfamiliar with Texas.’
Historical Significance of a Democratic Win
Should Talarico secure the Senate seat, he would be the first Democrat since 1988 to win a Senate election in Texas. The Republican party has consistently triumphed in presidential elections there since 1980. Despite Texas’ Republican history, Talarico has mounted a significant challenge to Paxton, defeating veteran Republican Senator John Cornyn in the GOP primary runoff held in May.
Paxton aligns himself with former President Donald Trump, who has endorsed his Senate bid. Talarico advocates a prudent, faith-driven political approach focused on affordability and economic challenges.
Paxton comes into the general election with a mixed history, highlighted by his 2023 impeachment and subsequent acquittal, resolution of a securities-fraud accusation in 2024, allegations of bribery and corruption, and acknowledgment of an extramarital affair, all of which he denies.
