Democratic Fundraising Surge in Traditionally Republican Texas Districts

43 minutes ago 0

Texas, known for its traditionally Republican voting patterns, sees an unusual shift in campaign contributions. Analysis by The Houston Chronicle shows Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico raising more funds in historically Republican ZIP codes than Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.

In University Park, an area previously favoring Trump, Talarico secured $214,296, surpassing Paxton’s $181,656 through June 30. University Park is one of the key sources of individual contributions to Paxton’s Senate campaign nationwide.

Across 11 ZIP codes in four metropolitan areas typically supporting Trump, Talarico gathered $1.3 million from individual donors compared to Paxton’s $422,000. This trend continues in The Woodlands, where Talarico raised $238,622 against Paxton’s $39,281 across four ZIP codes.

In West Houston, Talarico’s contributions totaled $255,116 in ZIP code 77024, vastly exceeding Paxton’s $60,643. Similarly, Talarico raised $98,189 in ZIP code 77079, more than the $10,405 Paxton managed.

In suburban areas like Katy and Richmond, Talarico again leads with $152,557 to Paxton’s $50,228. ZIP code 75230 in North Dallas shows Paxton with $77,116, overshadowed by Talarico’s $270,286. Highland Park remains Paxton’s top funding source nationally, with $211,701.

The shift indicates a movement of funds toward Talarico in districts previously under Republican control. Many contributions arose from Houston, Dallas, and The Woodlands, areas Trump won decisively in past elections.

Talarico’s largest fundraisers still stem from regions predominantly voting against Trump. ZIP code 78746 in West Lake Hills and neighborhoods west of Austin contributed $584,863, compared to Paxton’s $145,365.

The broader political landscape indicates fluctuating dynamics in Texas. The Chronicle mapped itemized contributions, revealing key differences across ZIP codes and House districts.

“When asked about Trump’s impact, Paxton acknowledged declining numbers after the Republican convention in Dallas.”

Paxton explicitly cited the convention as affecting their campaign. Internal polling reportedly showed Paxton with a slight edge, contradicting some public perceptions.

Texas Senate race polling reveals Talarico leading in most surveys. Eight September polls included six showing Talarico leading by up to six points and one tied. The Paxton campaign poll suggested a slight lead for Paxton.

Other polls show Talarico’s consistent edge, with some within margins of error. Marist University poll placed Talarico 50 percent to 44 percent over Paxton, the most significant lead recorded that month.
