Denmark Stands Firm Against U.S. Control Over Greenland

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark reiterated the country’s commitment to defending its territory, including Greenland, during a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. She stated that Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory under Danish control, was not for sale. Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s readiness to defend ‘every inch of NATO, including our own territory.’

President Trump has expressed his desire for the United States to gain control over Greenland, citing the island’s strategic importance for global protection. In January, he suggested using military force to achieve this goal. Denmark has since prepared contingency plans to safeguard its interests, including the proposal to destroy airfields in Greenland should an American invasion occur.

Despite earlier threats, the U.S. has shifted towards negotiations to increase its influence in Greenland. This includes seeking access to additional military bases, demanding a say in major investment deals, and expanding the consulate in Nuuk, the capital.

These U.S. actions have strengthened the bond between Greenland and Denmark, as they present a united front against American pressure. Frederiksen emphasized the importance of respecting Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while highlighting NATO’s Article 5 collective defense agreement as a protective measure.

The European Union has expressed its support for Denmark and Greenland, affirming that decisions regarding the future of Greenland rest with the Greenlanders and Danes. According to Olof Gill from the European Commission, territorial integrity and national sovereignty are crucial principles under international law.
