Donovan Mitchell Reflects on Playoff Loss as Cavaliers Fall to Knicks

Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers faced a disappointing end to their season after being swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. This series eventually led the Knicks to become champions.

In Game 1, the Cavaliers seemed poised for an upset at Madison Square Garden. They led by 22 points in the fourth quarter but saw their advantage crumble. Jalen Brunson and his team mounted a comeback, tying the game and pushing it into overtime.

The Knicks outperformed the Cavaliers in a decisive manner, scoring 32 points to Cleveland’s 18 in the fourth quarter and dominating overtime with a 14-3 run. This led to a final score of 115-104, in favor of New York.

During a podcast interview, Mitchell expressed regret over the loss, calling it the one game he wished he could reclaim from his NBA career. He said, “Out of all the games, it’s that one. You’ve got to give credit where credit is due. They did their job, but we definitely gave them that game.”

Mitchell’s performance in Game 1 included 29 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Meanwhile, Brunson registered a game-high 38 points, along with six assists and five rebounds.

Following their victory over the Cavaliers, the Knicks continued their winning streak, eventually defeating the San Antonio Spurs to clinch the NBA Finals.
