Duke Mallard: The Beloved Mascot of Oak Lawn Park District

53 minutes ago 0

Duke Mallard, a charming duck, is a common sight at Wolfe Wildlife Refuge in Oak Lawn. He stands out as he strolls the grounds and is affectionately known as ‘The Duke.’ Duke made an appearance at the Oak Lawn Park District’s Howl-O-Ween celebration, greeted visitors, and formed new friendships.

‘He’s adorable,’ said Jack Leiser, who attended with his wife, Martha, and their daughter, Lucy.

The celebration included various themed stations such as a vampire game, Ernie’s Rubber Duck Game, a spooky witch setting, Paw Patrol characters, and a pumpkin patch. Duke captivated the crowd, particularly Lucy, who was enchanted by his presence.

Duke Mallard interacted with visitors like the Leiser family, Jordan, a youngster dressed as a werewolf, and others during the Howl-O-Ween festivities. A Park District employee portrays Duke, making him a beloved mascot since his introduction in 2023.

Duke replaced the previous mascot, Seemore Eagle. His creator, Genae Grabowski, a mixed media designer for the Park District, designed Duke and incorporated his symbol into the logo. Under her guidance, Duke’s story took shape alongside Justin Waters, with Seemore Eagle being cast as Duke’s adoptive father.

‘Oak Lawn had a mascot originally named Seemore Eagle, but we didn’t want to remove him from the story completely,’ explained Grabowski. Duke assumes the role of ‘fun’ in the Oak Lawn Park District, supported by friends and family during programs and events.

Though Seemore doesn’t appear live at events anymore, Duke has taken center stage. His story, influenced by Grabowski’s personal journey at the district, reflects her passion for her work. Duke has appeared at various events, such as the Chicago Sky WNBA game and Summer’s Last Blast.

Grabowski remains connected through her artwork and narrative contributions. Through Duke’s character, families have found a mascot to cherish.

‘Families loved Duke, and the kids were thrilled to have a local face to enjoy,’ Grabowski shared.

Employees at Oak Lawn Park District enjoy their mascot. Michael Sinkewich stated, ‘We love Duke, he’s a good salesperson for the district.’ Brandi Brumfield added, ‘Duke brings many smiles and is engaging.’

Duke has embraced his role, endearing himself to the community with charm and a touch of whimsy.
