Edvardas Stasys’ Recruiting Journey Gaining Momentum

Benet Academy’s 6-foot-8 forward, Edvardas Stasys, is experiencing a surge in his recruiting journey. Recently, he received an offer from Illinois, marking his first from a Big Ten school. Stasys expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’m super grateful for it, for sure. It’s definitely an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Stasys plans to take his time before making a decision. He intends to visit various schools over the coming months. He aims to narrow down his choices carefully. Currently, he is considering majoring in finance or business. His suitors include Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Belmont, Central Michigan, Harvard, Holy Cross, Robert Morris, Western Michigan, and Yale.

The offer from Illinois, a team that reached the Final Four under Coach Brad Underwood, brings additional excitement. Among Illinois’ roster is sophomore point guard Blake Fagbemi, a former teammate of Stasys. Fagbemi led the Redwings to their first Class 4A state championship in 2025.

“Illinois is a great program,” Benet coach Gene Heidkamp stated. “We have one of our players there now. It’s great to see them recruiting kids in the western suburbs.”

Stasys views the Illinois offer as a testament to his progress as a player. Heidkamp voiced his support, “I’m happy for him. He’s starting to see the results of his hard work.” Stasys has grown into a key player and is expected to play a significant role for Benet next season. As a junior, he averaged 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, earning All-State third-team honors.

As a sophomore, Stasys contributed as a reserve to Benet’s state championship team. Last season, he took on a larger role, helping the team reach the state championship game where they lost to Marist. Coach Heidkamp mentioned that more will be asked of Stasys, especially on offense.

Stasys has been enhancing his offensive skills, focusing on shooting and playmaking. “Shooting the ball is definitely an emphasis,” he said. “Sophomore year, I didn’t have the ball in my hands much, but as the years progress, my role gets bigger.” His aim remains clear: winning a state championship with his team.

In addition to basketball, Stasys considers his connections in his recruiting process. He has insights into the Illinois program through Fagbemi and a personal connection to Yale, where his sister Gabby is a volleyball player. “She loves the Yale community,” Stasys noted. “But I’m on my own recruiting journey.” He seeks a program that combines high-level basketball with a supportive community and strong player development. Stasys also values academics as an added benefit.

As Benet prepares for the upcoming season, much is anticipated for Stasys. His versatility on the court and ongoing growth ensure he will be integral to the team’s success.
