Emergency Closure on Kennedy Expressway Due to Retaining Wall Damage

6 days ago 0

State road officials closed an exit on the Kennedy Expressway near Jefferson Park on Saturday. The closure comes after a portion of a retaining wall crumbled.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced an emergency closure at the inbound Lawrence Avenue exit on the Kennedy Expressway, also known as Interstate 90. This decision followed the early morning failure of a concrete retention wall.

At this time, it is unclear how long the exit will remain closed. IDOT stated, “The department is inspecting the damage and evaluating the necessary repairs.” They promised to provide more information, including the scope of required repairs and the duration of closures, following inspections.

During the closure, IDOT advises commuters plan for additional travel time. They should seek alternate routes. It’s crucial for drivers to exercise caution, especially in work zones, and remain aware of workers and repair equipment.
