Escalating Violence in the West Bank: Attacks and Tensions

Israeli settlers targeted Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank early Sunday. Two mosques were set on fire, and buildings were defaced with graffiti, according to Palestinian officials.

The violence followed a deadly incident on Friday. Four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers, one acting as a security coordinator for an Israeli settlement, died in a confrontation. This occurred when a group of armed settlers approached the Palestinian village of Tal, near Nablus. Villagers confronted the settlers, leading to a standoff. Video evidence suggested a Palestinian grabbed a settler’s weapon. Local authorities accused the settlers of inciting violence. Both sides reportedly exchanged gunfire.

Children were seen outside a burned mosque in Qusra village on Sunday, adding to the grim situation in the West Bank region.

These incidents are part of a larger pattern of clashes. U.N. and Palestinian Authority data indicate that dozens of Palestinians have died, and hundreds have been injured this year.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, amid upcoming elections, initiated a significant security operation. He labeled the violence as terrorism against Israelis and reinforced military presence in the West Bank. Members of his government, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, have advocated for West Bank annexation. Israel captured this territory during the 1967 Middle East war.

Palestinian officials reported multiple settler attacks in various West Bank areas on the morning of the incident. Abdel Azim Wadi, head of Qusra’s village council, described a mosque being torched after it was fully furnished. Hebrew slogans like “Jewish revenge” were spray-painted on its walls, naming an Israeli killed near Tal.

The Palestinian Authority condemned the attacks as part of a wider assault on Palestinians. They labeled the violence as “state-backed settler terrorism.” The Israeli military responded by sending troops to investigate, discovering graffiti and arson signs. Police officers were deployed to gather evidence.

Military statements emphasized a strong condemnation of attacks on religious sites. They asserted their commitment to maintaining security while pursuing perpetrators. An official mentioned that such aggression from Israelis distracts military efforts from defense and counter-terrorism objectives. Over the weekend, more than 130 individuals, including suspected terrorists, were arrested.

Other incidents included attempts to burn another mosque near Kour, and attacks on Palestinian workers in Kafr Malik. Farid Jiyousi of Kour’s village council reported that worshippers extinguished an attempted fire just in time. This was the first attack the village encountered, with more graffiti found in the area.

Over the weekend, a security clampdown led to the arrest of 60 Palestinians overnight, tracked by the Palestinian Prisoners Club.

Most international bodies deem Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal, a stance Israel disputes. Palestinians view the West Bank as central to their future state. Netanyahu’s government, opposing Palestinian statehood, has expanded settlements rapidly.
